United Vs. City
|
I have an unhealthy(?) hatred of people who refer to either Manchester team in this way. I wish one pundit would make a challenge and reply with a '...do you mean Oxford United?... Rotherham United?...'
Made me wonder in all the professional leagues in the UK, who are all the United's & City's'?
West Ham United...obviously.

I hate it when I hear this. the ONLY place it should be allowed is in Manchester itself. People who use it outside of there deserve a fucking hard slap.

On a similar topic, it drives me mad when the Yanks refer to 'Paris, France' or 'London, England'.
I presume it's because many US citizens need the extra help to know where they are?
NB If there's a pissant place somewhere in the US called Paris or something then they should refer to that with the additional location detail, and understand that around the globe if you just say 'London', all intelligent people will know that you mean the real one.

If it's obvious from the context who the "United" is (e.g. Scunthorpe vs Exeter), I've no problem.
But if you've got Manchester United vs Newcasle United, it annoys me.
Strangely, I'm not quite so annoyed when it's done with Cities.
